Duck Fook

Did I mention I hate Duke? Like alot? Like possibly more than any other sports team, professional or college? It is not a hatred based on a rivalry though. It is a hatred due to class. And a hatred generally based on jealousy. A hate because Duke has had everything that Wisconsin has never had. Duke has a pick of nearly any player they want in the country, every year. Sure, they have to battle North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, etc. for those players, but there are plenty to go around. Wisconsin has to do just about everything right, and have just about everything to go their way in order to be a Top 10 team. At one point, it didn't even seem possible that they could ever do it. But, it was shown in a March run in 2000 and in a number one ranking a few years back that it could be done. But if it happens once every 10 years, we are extremely fortunate. Duke is in the position to do it every, single, year. And if it doesn't happen, they are disappointed. The only other team I can compare them to is the Yankees. Unlimited funds to do with however you please, an expectation of championships, crazy room for error. And if it doesn't work, you can just throw more money at the problem. It is something that Wisconsin will probably never have the luxury of. Not that Wisconsin doesn't have lots at its disposal, it is one of the largest collegiate sports programs in the country, and has a great arena and fan base. But it is not a historic power. It will never be Duke. So fuck Duke.

The other problem with Duke is that they are dicks about it. Their players are annoying. Coach K puts on this facade that he is a great human (and he probably mostly is) but then he is on the sidelines reportedly using the worst language anyone has ever heard (which, I fully support, but don't be fake about it). Their fans are annoying rich kids. They are basically everything Wisconsin isn't. So fuck Duke.

This is a matchup that Wisconsin fans have been wishing for for a long time. A chance to get the mighty Blue Devils at the Kohl Center. The problem is, this game is happening at a terrible time for Wisconsin. Bucky does not have the athletes to keep up with Duke. Duke probably has 12 guys that would start for just about any Big Ten team. Wisconsin probably has 4 guys that could play for Duke. The Kam Taylor, Alando Tucker Badgers would have had a good chance at beating Duke. But short of a perfect game, I don't see UW pulling this one out. The Grateful Red will keep this one close. The Badgers have to play their game, which is to slow it down, and get back in transition. If Bucky can make their shots (not an easy task) and keep Duke out of transition (historically impossible), they have a chance. But I think Duke wins by about 15. So fuck Duke.

OTHER STUFF

-Anyone hear the Tiger voicemail? Pretty good stuff. If I wasn't so lazy, I would find audio and link to it.

-Does ESPN have a contract where they are required to show kids dying of cancer every other month. There is nothing I would rather watch less. At least they give sufficient warning, but sometimes I'm in my morning fog and its ten minutes in and they are talking about some kid having his fucking eye amputated before I realize what is happening.

I Want My Trophy Back

Wow. Holy Fucking Shit. What a game. And I say what a game because I mentally blocked out the first 25 minutes of the game, and pretend it wasn't the worst first half and a quarter of basketball I've ever seen played by people over the age of 12, with penises (I assume). But anyway, that shot that Bohannon had at the end of regulation was the clutchest of clutch, and Hughes then apparently forgot what a choker he has been all year, and thought he was in Austin, Texas last November or something. It looked like they might lose by 30 at one point. The strange thing is that it didn't seem like an upset. I know seedings dictate that it was, but if that game had been played in that fake ass ACC/Big 11 challenge, I would have thought the Badgers should win. Beating Xavier won't seem like an upset either, although that is far from a sure thing. But if we get to the Sweet 16? I gotta say the season is a success, no matter how frustrating.

The excitement was augmented by the Siena-Ohio St. game happening at the same time, and us getting cut ins every four seconds. CBS did their jobs perfectly. That game was actually more exciting that the Badger game to be honest, and even though the seeds were closer, it felt like more of an upset. Especially since 8 seeded Ohio St. basically got a fucking HOME game.

Oh, and by the way, Sports Bottle (and I know you are going to tell me I'm stupid), I want my fucking ACC/Big 11 trophy back. All this bullshit of counting regular season games, and declaring the ACC better is fucking stupid. I've got a scoreboard call for you: BIG TEN 2, ACC zilch. Oh, and BOTH ACC teams were the higher seeds, and BOTH fucked my bracket in the ass (especially goddamn Clemson whom I blacked out and picked in the elite 8 for some reason). And seriously, Cleveland State? Fucking ACC.

OTHER THOUGHTS:

-Gus Johnson's head would've exploded if he had been calling either UW or Siena last night. Raftery's "ONIONS! GARDEN VARIETY!" was pretty good too.

-My bracket may be the worst I've ever picked. Already down FIVE Sweet 16 and two elite 8.

-This tournament is ruining my life. Two days in a row now I've gotten 6 or less hours of sleep because of basketball and then having to get up for work.

-What is going on with the floors at the sites? Some have the generic blue and black, and then some were apparently exempted (Miami, Dayton, I think there were a few others). Is there some kind of rule about how old a floor could be or something? I was hoping to see that multi colored blue/orange/white floor in Boise.

-Fuck Marquette.

ESPN's unfathomable love with the ACC

*Note* The opinion of ESPN is in no way, shape or form related to the opinion of Mr. Sports Bottle. I just read his post and it reminded me of what I heard a few days ago.

So I'm just casually watching ESPN while making some food the other day, when sports caster after sports caster starts babbling on about how they can make a really good case for UNC to still be number 1. What the fuck? Really? This is fucking basketball, if you lose, you drop, regardless of who you play, because there are 35 games to make it up later on. They lost to Boston College, who for all intents and purposes has no business being in a game with them. Look at that powder puff schedule that's gotten them to number 24 in the nation. They lost two early games to *cough cough* Saint Louis and an ok Purdue team. But what matters is they haven't lost lately, so they rise in the polls.

The Badgers on the other hand are outside of the top 25 right now with losses to the currently #5, #7 and #15 team in the nation. Other than the UConn game early on those were all really hard fought losses, however we've spread out losses out during the non-conference season and thusly we dropped later on and haven't climbed back into the top 25.

What about Pitt still being undefeated? Yea, they haven't lost and yet just because some dickwads at ESPN think UNC is better on paper, they are totally willing to throw them ahead of an undefeated team. Even though Pitt just clubbed a Georgetown team who had been playing really well lately. Have I ever mentioned that I love the Big East? I was always a huge fan of that conference and it topped my list when Marquette went there in the wake of the, the ACC is trying to make a football super conference(which failed) so we'll make a basketball super conference(which succeeded and left them with a still pretty good football conference), poaching of all the good C-USA teams at the time. The Big East is what the Big Ten wishes it could be.

But anyways, that's just the way the basketball polls work, there are so many more games than football that there is usually a lot of liberty taken with moving teams up and down. Of course what do the polls even really matter other than being a reference point for SoS computations to help determine what bubble teams get in to the PLAYOFFS at the end of the season. College basketball is so much better than college football.
