My Super Bowl

The Packers have won the Super Bowl. The good folk of Wisconsin were out in force last night, I'm sure of this.

My only real grievance with the celebrations so far has been the astounding number of people still doing the Brent who? thing. I get it, Favre is/was/always will be a complete turbo douche. That's fine, hell I even said it myself last night, Rodgers now has one more Super Bowl MVP than Favre. I just never really liked the whole Brent who? meme and I had hoped it would eventually die, you know 3 years after he left and we had just won a Super Bowl and all. To me, this game was less about proving Favre wrong and more about proving everyone else who doubted Rodgers and TT wrong, including some hack named Colin Cowherd. Nick Collins would have needed at least one more pick six and maybe another turnover/3 sacks to steal the MVP trophy from Rodgers. There was no way that award was going to anyone else.

So apparently Christina Aguilera skipped a whole verse of the national anthem last night? Two things, who was the first person to actually notice this? Cuz I know it wasn't anyone at the bar that I was at. Second, is this even news except for the fact that the over/under of 1:54 became an under when it very easily would have gone over 2 minutes with the extra verse? If it's not Vegas relevant for the Super Bowl, it's not news!

One more pre Super Bowl tidbit before I delve into my Sunday, the Packers were sized for their Super Bowl rings Saturday night. Either that's what normally happens? Or that's a crotch full of bowling balls from the boys upstairs in the Packers organization haha. EDIT: That is not normal and it was McCarthy's decision.

Coming into this game I managed to watch zero pre game shenanigans until about 30 to 45 minutes before the game started. I got to the bar that I had watched every game at since my appearance at Lambeau christmas weekend when we crushed the Giants. I was hoping it would be dead and it was, first person there, got my seat right in the middle of the bar, just like usual. I wasn't nervous all week, but I started feeling that knot as soon as the opening kickoff came. The game started off slow, players working out their own nerves, couple of jabs met by both teams, little sloppy offensively. Then Rodgers heated up, two quick scores, high fives were everywhere, 14-0 Packers. The jitters were starting to fade.

The Steelers got a garbage field goal and Jarrett Bush stole a pick at around mid field. I believe my exact tweet at that moment, which I immediately knew was a mistake because I'm not a fan of Bush, was "Four more years of Bush!". This will be relevant shortly and I'll explain myself at further length. After that pick, I knew we were going to score again, I just had that feeling, but I said aloud, man I sure hope we don't leave more than a minute on the clock for Roethlisberger(Did you know he's raped multiple women?). Of course we immediately score and I was happy, but I kind of groaned because I could feel that inevitable end of the first half TD coming. Little did I know how terrible that drive would be for my psyche.

The Steelers started marching, fine whatever, but then Shields goes down, fuck. Ok, ok this is fine, we can handle this... Woodson goes down. FUCK. I'm cursing up a storm, the world is over, we're done, stick a fork in us, shit. I started making deals with the devil in my head, just bring one of the two back, I don't care which one, just bring one back, we can do this with one of these guys back. My concerns are immediately brought to light when Bush does his where's waldo routine in the corner of the end zone. The only thing that would have made that play better for me is if he had fallen down and started flailing around. The next tweet after my four more years of Bush was "I fucking hate Jarrett Bush", because I do. He's a dimeback/special teams guru at best at the NFL level, which is fine, teams need roleplayers too. Let's just not talk this guy up into being some greatly improved player because he's slightly less shitty this year compared to last year.

At this point in the game, Nick Collins is your non media biased MVP, his pick six was terrific and he was an absolute beast out there. Did you see the way he was flying up on receivers and running backs? He was hitting people so hard they were literally flying backwards from the point of contact. It was amazing to watch, it gave me chills. That was exactly what you want from your best safety in the Super Bowl. Big turnover, points scored, punishing hits on whoever is foolish enough to wander within 10 yards of him. You couldn't have asked for more.

Still, we were up 21-10 at halftime and I felt like we were losing, I kept frantically checking Twitter for updates on Shields and Woodson, nothing, nothing, worst Super Bowl halftime show ever, still nothing. Finally we got word that Shields was questionable to return, but he should be back, whew, there was a chance now, up 11 points with 30 minutes to go, that we could win.

We go 3 and out and the Steelers immediately score a touchdown, good god, everything was going wrong, another 3 and out. The god damn plane has crashed into the mountain. I sink into my chair and stare longingly up at the big screen, it's glow flickering around me, mocking me. We're going to tease you until the end and then rip your heart out... The Packers punted again near the end of the 3rd quarter, still clinging to a 21-17 lead. I stared at a few commercials, one made me smile I think, I was dejected though, right before the break was over I decided to step out to have a cigarette. I'm about 2 drags in and the back alley explodes in cheers, I text my buddy inside, What happened! "You're not allowed back inside" was his reply. It was the Mendenhall fumble, the Packers were on the move, more cheers. I quickly finished my smoke and ran back in. Right as I got around the entrance way corner and looked up at the TV, Rodgers was firing a pass at a wide open Jordy Nelson that went careening off his hands and into the defensive backfield. My buddy just scowled at me, "See? You're fucking jinxing us!".

Thus begins the worst possible way to end a Packer Super Bowl win that I ever could have imagined. I sat down and put my arm over my eyes and say, how about if I do this? Nelson catches the ball and scampers for about 37 yards down to the 2. Hmm. I watch the next play and Rodgers gets sacked on a broken play. Hmmm. I put my head down in my arm on the bar, Jennings touchdown. Ok this is getting creepy... I started off the Steelers drive not watching, but it didn't seem to affect them and I watched their drive all the way down for the score and 2 point conversion. 28-25 Packers with 7 minutes to go. I looked at my friend and said, I know what I have to do. I got up from the bar, went outside and got updates via texts for the last 7 minutes of the game. I was so convinced that I was jinxing the game by watching, that I stayed outside for the last 7 damn minutes of the game. If that's not insanity, I'm not sure how else you would define it.

I'll leave you with this tidbit from Aaron Nagler of CheeseheadTV. This is Mike McCarthy's misson statement after he was hired by the Packers in 2006.

Picks N' Such

The game last night was not very good, except for about 10 minutes right near the end. I guess it isn't the BCS's fault that McCoy got hurt, although for some reason I feel like there was a a conspiracy afoot. Because the BCS title game has been good like 2, maybe three times since its conception (which HAD to have been some type of forced sexual assault). And the BCS doesn't care because they claim to make money hand over fist regardless. So they saw the results of the Get Together and resolved to prove a point to the fair readers of this blog, that they will do whatever the fuck they want, and you will like it.

Other thoughts on the game:

- Made this comment last night to my a few others: "When the second half started, Mack Brown looked alot like Bud Kilmer right before the second half of the championship game on "Varsity Blues" and I though for sure Colt McCoy would coach the second half.

-Not sure if it was a coincidence or not, but there was a smoking hot chick sitting next to Colt McCoy's dad that I'm guessing was Colt's woman. Good work.

-Alabama was still better than Texas.

-That Gilbert guy was 5/24 passing at one point.

-Nick Saban is a dick. Even after he wins a "National Championship"

NFL

The plan this weekend is as follows: 1) Stay up late playing video games and/or continuing to trudge through "The Book of Basketball"; 2) Sleep in relatively late Saturday (like 9 a.m. is considered "late" these days); 3) Drink coffee, surf Internets; 4) Pretend to be helpful in house chores; 5) Watch Bucky v. Purdue/CU v. Wichita St.; 6) Watch football for 7 hours; 7) sleep; 8) coffee; 9) watch football for 7 hours.

This weekend is not as good as next weekend will be (especially if the Pack doesn't fuck this up), but it is going to be good anyway. Playoff football is finally here. I asked my wife the other day if she knew what we were doing this weekend. Her response "I don't know". I said, "I know. We are watching football for 14 hours. So don't make other plans."

I have a hard time envisioning a scenario that doesn't involve Jarrett Bush or a kickoff return for a touchdown where the Packers don't beat the Cardinals. Even if I pretend I never saw the Packers' starters destroy the Cards starters for a quarter in two meaningless games, I still think the Packers are better all around. Offense: I think this is the only thing that could slant to the Cardinals, but you pretty much know what you are going to get from the Pack. Warner might throw for 400 yds and 5TDs (all against Bush) or he might throw 4 picks and fumble twice. The Packers defense is much, much better than the Cards. Special Teams is probably in the Cards favor but only because of Crosby. I expect a relatively high scoring affair. I'm going to say 31-23 Pack. We will know on Sunday who our 2nd round opponent will be with a win. I can't mentally handle another Packers v. He Who Shall Not Be Named game. Even though the Packers are playing better now.

TERRIBLE PICKS

I'm not really sure what is considered "good" in picking games. My assumption would be somewhere around 50% would be acceptable if you picked every game. I am now unacceptable this season after getting raped last week.

Last Week: 6-10
Season: 113-114-4
All-Time: 247-240-6

Cin (-2.5), Phi (+4), Bal (+3), GB (Pk)

Playoffs? Christmas? Bowl Games? New Year's?

PACKERS

That was a beat down of epic proportions. Strangely, if Hasselbeck doesn't throw 14 INTs (he just threw another one) Seattle actually kind of sort of moved the ball on us. Hasselbeck threw more INTs in the last two games than Rodgers has ALL SEASON. Rodgers is really, really, really good.

As weak of a schedule as we played this year, it is pretty disingenuous to say 15 games into the year that our defense hasn't proven anything because we got eaten up by Minnesota (twice) and Pittsburgh. And we "padded our stats against bad teams". The thing is, there are approximately 25 bad teams in the NFL this year so EVERY team played a bunch of bad teams. There are two 40 point blowouts every week. So you can save the criticism (Brian Billick) for someone that is a fucking moron (i.e. anyone that thinks anything Billick says is right). The Packers have a large hole in their defense (Jarrett Bush). But if they can get to the QB, they can mask the deficiencies. They also have a large hole on offense (the line), but if the receivers can get open and catch, Rodgers is good enough to mask this. This is the same story for every other team in the league. Everyone has a glaring weakness. The good ones can cover it up. I'm not sure what my point is other than we are what we are, a pretty fucking dangerous team, that is completely capable of shutting you out, or letting you throw for 500 yards and score 40 on a given day, while also putting up 40 of our own. I give the Pack a puncher's chance against any team in the NFC right now. They should be no more than touchdown underdogs against anyone.

Next week could get awkward. The Pack will know by the time they play what needs to happen. They can basically pick their opponent, although I'm not sure I recommend trying to lose. Depending on how things shake out, they could be at Minnesota, Arizona, Philly or Dallas. Say they know the following at kickoff next week: a) win and they will come back to Arizona next week, b) lose and go to Minnesota. I say they better fucking win. OR a) win and go to Dallas, b) lose and go to Arizona. Now you've got a different decision potentially there are a million scenarios, but what if they are better off losing? Do you take the chance of basically laying down? My thinking is that in the NFL, you can't do this because you will get punished. Even if you are resting all of your starters, your backups have to play a normal game.

Dear Giants, thank you for sucking.

CHRISTMAS

No vacuums for me this year, although I did get a garbage can holder last year. I got a GPS, a bunch of clothes, some books, and some cash. Pretty nice haul.

I also got the equipment to hook my PS3 up to the internets. Playing Madden online is pretty life altering when you do it the first couple of times. It was like getting a whole new game. Other games were not so good online. Madden was by far the best.

Being back at work sucks.

BOWL GAMES

Speaking of being back at work, everyone in the U.S. should be given off the rest of the week after today. Reason? I've stated this before, and it applies again: If there is a major U.S. sporting event (if the sport is not normally played on a weekday afternoon) on DURING THE DAY, it is a holiday, and you shouldn't be working. Tomorrow there is a bowl game on at 3:30 p.m. I'm pretty sure Wednesday there is too. The Badgers play Ohio St. at 1 p.m. on Thursday. I have to work all of those days. It should be against the law.

NEW YEAR'S

Going to be getting blacked out at a buddy's house. I somehow have to work all day on New Year's Eve. I'm old enough that going to the bars doesn't sound like fun at all.

Huh?

Alright, I lied about it being my last post of the week. I meant the last long post. Anyways, Aaron Rouse was just let go, despite the fact that he was a starter, and despite the fact that everyone else is injured, and despite the fact that the guy we signed to replace him doesn't know the defense and won't be able to contribute this week. Bueller? Bueller? If this means a Jarrett Bush start, I'm going to stop by Lambeau on my way home and leave a bag of flaming shit.

PS. I'm glad I picked up Laurent Robinson. I may just have to start him this week.

Prognosis Negative

* On Collins: Has clavicle sprain. Will see how he is on Wednesday. Too early to give prognosis.

Can anyone explain to me what the above sentence means? I'm far from being a medical doctor, but I was under the assumption that the clavicle was a bone. Better known as the collar bone? How the fuck do you sprain a bone?

I'm still unhappy. And I'm still overreacting. And I completely forgot to trash Jarrett Bush. TWO false starts on punts? Really? Seems to me that the extra .2 seconds as a gunner on a punt isn't going to make that big of a difference. Fuck is that frustrating.

Finally Setting In

It just occurred to me that the Packers are not playing this weekend. Or any weekend for about 7 months. And that, sucks. A great sense of sadness has washed over me. At least we aren't Jets fans. But as we set in for a long, cold, snowy-ass winter, and count down the days until we waste the 9th overall pick on a player that has no chance of actually helping us next year, lets take a look at the position grades for the year. Grades are based on actual results v. my expectations going into the year.

QB: We all know what happened in the offseason and the pressure on A-Rodg to perform. Besides sporting awesome facial hair and spouting some pretty great comments, he was a pretty damn good quarterback. And the scary thing is, it is only his first year. Taking all that into consideration, I will give Mr. Rodgers a A-.

RB: Ryan Grant got his 1,000 yds, but averaged 2.7 yds a carry (slight exaggeration). He showed almost none of the burst he had last year. He also had a bunch of excuses (holdout, hammy, dogshit offensive line). B-Jax and Wynn showed flashes. Grade: C-

WR: Greg Jennings is a beast (when he isn't dropping the ball). Driver would start for about 30 other NFL teams. Jordy fuckin' Nelson had a nice rookie year with the chances he was given. Jones was hurt alot. Robert Ferguson wasn't on the team. Ruvell Martin is tall. Overall I though they were pretty great: B+.

TE: Donald Lee was invisible most of the year. Jermichael Finley was allegedly an athletic freak. Tory Humphry was on the field to fill out 11 guys. Not sure if it was not getting open, or not getting thrown to. Grade: D+

FB: Korey Hall and whatever the other guy's name is, are the same exact person. Neither should be given the ball on 4th and goal from the one. I can't really blame THEM for that playcall. Seemed to block well, caught a bunch of swing passes. Haven't yet perfected the William Henderson jump. Grade: B-

O-Line: They didn't run block well. A-Rodg is lucky to be alive. They got a shitload of penalties. They got hurt alot. Grade: D.

D-Line: Kampman was really the only one that showed up. I would guess that Pickett took up some blockers or something, but I bet he had like 3 tackles. The other d-lineman sucked. Grade: F

LB: Not a good year here either. Hawk was either injured, over-matched by the position change or not that good. Barnett was hurt when he wasn't hanging out in Sasquatch costumes at bars two days before a game. Chillar was serviceable at best against the pass, and useless v. run. Poppinga was Mormon. Grade: F

CB: Woodson and Harris are still pretty good. Harris injured a spleen but returned to form. Trammon Williams was really good at times, below average on others, but he is young and will only get better. Will Blackmon is a dime back at best. Jarrett Bush should be shot. Grade: B-

S: Nick Collins was somehow a Pro Bowler, although that was based purely on "stats". Whoever picked that team obviously never watched a game because he gave up as many TDs as he had picks, was invisible at times, and wasn't great against the run. Atari Bigby was mysteriously hurt and seemingly never played, Rouse was below average as a fill in, Woodson was terrible as a safety. Charlie Peprah played Chong to Nick Barnett's Cheech. Grade: C-

Special Teams: Mason Crosby was OK. Derrick Frost was an abomination and an embarrassment to the position of punter. Will Blackmon was a pretty good punt returner. Too many penalties, too many Jarrett Bush sightings. Probably cost us at least 2 games by themselves. Grade: D-.

Coaching: McCarthy got badly outcoached by Brad Childress in a game. Read that again: badly out coached by Mr. fucking McGoo Brad Childress. Failed to adjust when things weren't working. Probably ran it too little. Insisted on handing it to Korey (three carries per year) Hall in crucial situations. Settled for 52 yarder in Minnesota. Team as a whole constantly failed in clutch. Had a lot to do with coaching A-Rodg. Grade: D+.

GM: Everyone has their opinion of Teddy T. I think he made the right call on A-Rodg, but executed it poorly. Made no free agent moves other than Chillar. Made questionable draft day decisions: Jordy fuckin' Nelson? Not a very likable guy. I'm starting to click towards not liking him, but he needs more time (like one more year). I like his general philosophy, but there has to be SOMEONE available that would fit a need in free agency. Grade: D+.
